What it can power
A mid-size unit can run a furnace fan, a fridge, a sump pump and lights together, when connected correctly. Larger air conditioners and electric heating usually need a bigger class.
Good to know
Connecting a portable generator to a home panel must be done by a qualified electrician with the right transfer equipment. See connect a generator to your home.
Fuel is usually gasoline; ask about fuel delivery for longer rentals.
If you need three-phase power or more than about 12 kW, look at a towable diesel generator.
