Generator safety

Generators kill people every year, most often through carbon monoxide. These rules prevent almost all of it.

Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, in a basement, in a shed or near a window, door or vent. Carbon monoxide is invisible, has no smell and kills quickly.

Rules to follow

Outdoors only, well away from the building

Keep the exhaust pointing away from windows, doors and air intakes. Install a battery or plug-in carbon monoxide alarm inside.

Keep it dry

Do not run a generator in rain or snow without a proper canopy that keeps the exhaust clear. Never touch it with wet hands.

Refuel only when off and cool

Switch it off, let it cool, then add fuel. Spilled fuel on a hot engine can ignite. Store fuel in approved containers, away from the generator.

Use proper cables

Use cables rated for the load, undamaged, and fully uncoiled. See power cables.

Never backfeed

Do not plug a generator into a wall outlet. Read connecting a generator to your home.

Our generators are delivered ready to run. If you want an operator on site, see operator; for connection to a building, electrician hookup.
